• The Aftermath: arresting photos from the Balkans, former USSR and other places, depicting people coping after conflict has subsided.
• The horrors of the Jimmy Saville child abuse scandal have highlighted the real problem with child abuse – that it’s perpetrators are utterly plausible in their claims to honour and genuine care. This recent article by Malcolm Gladwell in the New Yorker on the Jerry Sandusky trial asks how paedophiles get away with it. Chilling but important reading.
• If you’ve not checked it out yet, James Naughtie’s series of 60 short radio programmes on The New Elizabethans is an absolute must. 60 people who have changed Britain for good or ill over the Queen’s diamond reign. He has a lovely manner, is informative, and often demonstrates great pathos as he tells these stories. Inspiring (mostly!) and fascinating.
• Howard Jacobson on Ed Miliband’s capitalising on his Jewish immigrant heritage and what it says about modern Britain.
