Our culture is obsessed with rights – but has no idea how to build community (or at least a community of diversity). It seems that it is impossible to hold to both.

Well, Hugh Palmer has just finished a brilliant series from 1 Corinthians 8-10 about the relationship between our rights and freedoms on the one hand, and our responsibilities and community service on the other hand. We have innate rights and freedoms; but out of love for the community we forgo them, as summed up in this brilliantly pithy statement used for this post’s title. For a church like All Souls, with over 60 different nationalities, as well as all kinds of different social backgrounds and stages in life represented, this is a word in season – very challenging but very necessary.
