My son Joshua (no, that’s not him in the picture) has become a Guinness Book of Records addict. Determined to find something vaguely redemptive about this obsession, I challenged him to list his 10 most pointless, as he saw it. Here they are:

  1. Most expensive pair of jeans: $60,000 was paid in 2005 on eBay by an anonymous Japanese donor for jeans aged 115 years old
  2. Most people performing a toast: 10,079 at Oodori Parade Zone, Sapporo, Japan in 2003
  3. Most hugs in 24 hours: Brett Sharp (USA) hugged 4135 different people in July 2005
  4. Most coin rolls in 1 minute: Belgian De’vo von Schattenreich passed a half dollar around the fingers of his right hand 45 times
  5. Smallest chess set: a board measuring 32x32mm (with a king measuring 13mm in height, pawn at 7mm) made by Jaspal Singh Kalsi (India) – pictured.
  6. Fish with largest repertoire of tricks: a 3-yr old calico fantail goldfish called Albert Einstein can perform 6 tricks including playing football and performing the limbo (at the Fish School in Gibsonia, PA, USA)
  7. Fastest Tiddlywinks mile: Ashrita Furman (USA) covered a mile while following tiddlywinks rules in 26 min 26 sec, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport building, Malaysia, Dec 2005
  8. Longest salami: 564.88 meters – longer than the largest sand dunes in the Sahara – created in Italy in 2005
  9. Longest paperchain: 54.33 miles made by 60 people in 24 hours in Virginia, USA, in 2005
  10. Most expensive cup of tea: rare Chinese green tea costs £1700 per kg (or £8.50 per cup)

But those who know about these things know that the man at Joshua’s no 7, Ashrita Furman, is the world record holder in world records held. But they are ALL completely pointless.
