War Changes Everything… and Nothing

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is ongoing. We’re almost 3 years in, unbelievably. And Ukraine is still holding on… just. Who knows what the impact of Trump’s election will be? Meanwhile, ordinary lives are being snuffed out and the wider population within the country struggle on. It is truly heartbreaking. And I know that other countries whose contexts are much less familiar to me are hellish too: Congo, Yemen, Gaza, etc etc.

After my trip last autumn, I was invited to write it up for Christianity Today in the US. The angle I was asked to focus on was one particular lecture I gave on C. S. Lewis’s remarkable 1939 sermon in Oxford’s University Church, ‘Learning in War-time‘.

Working on this was such a privilege and opportunity; and a very good learning lesson because the editorial standards and process were far more involved and exacting than any I’d previously encountered. It went through several iterations before they were happy, but I’m certain it finished up as a far better piece. I also loved the images CT’s art department dug up: parallels from London in the Blitz and Ukraine recently. Genius.
