Sacred Treasure
- We refuse to be enemies. This is an astonishing story from a family of Palestinian Christians living in Bethlehem.
- Dominic Lawson (son of former Chancellor Nigel, brother of celeb chef Nigella) writes wonderfully about his 19 year old daughter with Down’s Syndrome.
- Abp Justin Welby’s address at the National Prayer Breakfast, on 17th June – some great stuff
- Chris Green asks whether or not we should preach like TED talks
- Kouya has some good thoughts and links on the rapture, Zionism and other stuff
- Lots of Christian in-jokes here, but Andrew Wilson has written an hilarious one-sentence summary of loads of theological blogs – the comments are pretty funny too
D-Day 70 Treasure
At the start of the month there were all kinds of events marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day – the last time this will happen with the D-Day Veterans association which is being disbanded (its members are nearly all in their 90s). Here are some interesting finds
- Amazing: The D-Day landing sites, then and now
- If it had failed…? Here is Eisenhower’s draft of a speech he fortunately never had to give
- Some good infographics: an American overview ; useful map of the battle plans; even more comprehensive map from the 60th anniversary (on the presumption that little has changed in the last 10 years!)
- A remarkable way to remember the 9000 fallen on the beaches (from last year)
On a not unrelated note, 100 years after the start of the First World War:
- Allan Little has written a remarkable piece on Christopher Nevinson’s famous painting Paths of Glory
Topical Treasure
- An important Tanzanian voice on the #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign
- And while we’re on the subject, the Guardian has produced this brilliant Seven Digital Deadly Sins
- Amazing collection of photos from revolutionary Russia
- It’s done the rounds, but this is a fascinating selection of provocative advertising
- Landing a plane is hard enough as it is. But imagine having to land a fighter jet… on an aircraft carrier out at sea… onto a STOOL… Impressive
Quirky Treasure
- Some amusing Google StreetView moments – I particularly like the faked murder (right)
- Some surprises here: the vocal ranges of rock stars
- And on the topic of music – this is a lot of fun – discover which songs share the same chord structure
- And here are some great musicians snapped doing other things
- The Birthday paradox at the World Cup
- Probably dangerous, definitely hilarious: a really angry concrete machine on a building site (HT 22 Words)
