It just so happened that on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, we had come to the second instalment off our romp through Revelation. And it fell to me both to do an overview of all 7 letters to the 7 churches and at the same time do some justice (impossible) to what happened on that terrible autumn day.

Here was a stab anyway, downloadable from the All Souls website. And as promised, here are the slides (slightly amended and added for the sake of completion) so that the breakdown of the 7 letters can be seen with some degree of clarity. Hope it is helpful.

You will know of Godwin’s law, I’m sure, whereby the longer an internet discussion countinues, “the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” So, I’m afraid, the time has come.

One of the most gripping if chilling works of history that I’ve read is one that I find myself returning to a lot these days, despite the fact that it is well over 10 years since I first encountered it (in early research for Wilderness of Mirrors). Sir Ian Kershaw has spent a lifetime researching 20th Century German history and has brought all kinds of profound insights to the anglophone world (including through his mammoth two-volume biography of Hitler).

    Thanks Mark. I just preached through Revelation in seven evenings in June/July. We ought to compare notes about how we both structured this!

    Btw, did you notice the subtle change in structure half way through the messages (they are styled as royal proclamations, rather than letters), and can you account for it?!

    Hint: You need to look carefully at the *order* of the different elements in the messages…

    I have downloaded the podcasts…but haven’t got around to listening yet…ahem…
